Planning and Community Development

IMPORTANT NOTICE:The City of Mt. Pleasant has adopted a new zoning ordinance and map. All projects submitted for the March 1, 2018 Planning Commission meeting must conform to the new zoning ordinance and map. Applications for administrative review will be accepted beginning Feb. 21, 2018.

The Planning and Community Development Department facilitates the physical development of the City. Department staff provides support to the Planning Commission in administering the Master Plan and the Zoning Ordinance. The Department helps citizens and developers better understand development policies and regulations.

The Department works closely with other City departments throughout the development process, including Building Safety, Economic Development, and the Divisions of Public Works and Public Safety.

The Department assists the various economic development boards such as the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the TIFA, DDA, EDC, Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

Local Regulations
  • The City of Mt. Pleasant adopted a new character-based zoning ordinance, which takes effect Feb. 21, 2018.

    This new ordinance reflects input gathered from hundreds of community members throughout an extensive process that began in early 2016.

    The new ordinance provides a regulatory framework that will help the City to achieve several key objectives prioritized by the community, including preserving family neighborhoods, enhancing Downtown Mt. Pleasant and transforming our commercial corridors, including Mission Street.
